PROJECT MANAGEMENT

Project Proposal

Finding the perfect research question for the project wasn't an easy task. The screenshot below shows the initial ideas of the advanced project at the start of the module. After doing some research, the decision of going forward with the idea of doing the project based on the concept of 'karma' was made.

The making of the project proposal went through several stages. After further research on the topic, the project research question was decided and the project proposal was made with the following objectives

Draft 1

"Does karma Exist?"

The project aims to prove that Karma actually exists and to plant the idea on people's mind that, ‘What goes around comes around so people will fear doing bad and be encouraged to do good.

For this project, I will first make a script and time everything I need to do so that I keep myself on track on what needs to be done from scratch. Then I will start my research from finding the history of Karma to how it was found and theorised.

Then I will research examples of real-life Karma experiences posted by people via the internet and social media. Next, I will video interview people to ask their opinions about Karma and their real-life experiences on both good and bad Karma (showing the interviewees face or not is done according to the interviewee's preference). Then I will find videos of Karma incidents both good and bad ones and some funny ones from YoTube/Facebook/Instagram/TikTok to give the project a little essence of humour.

I will also add memes and some images/screenshots of real-life experiences about Karma written on Websites found during my research. I will then make some soothing music to play throughout the video. The video will then be cut and edited including the video interviews, screenshots, memes etc. I will then voice/speak throughout the video and present it (inspired by Jay Shetti) and do the final touches.

However, during the first proposal draft feedback session, my supervisor David mentioned that the research question was too commercial for an academic project as karma was a sociological concept. He also asked me to reconsider the whole proposal. Therefore I had to change the whole question and the proposal. Then the second draft was made.

Draft 2

"How does karma operate in everyday discourse?"

The project aims to show, how the concept of Karma operates in everyday discourse. This will be a solo project done, collaborating with other individuals who will be sharing their experiences of Karma in everyday life. Video clips of individuals talking about their real-life karma experiences will be put together with a few other visuals that will be related to this topic and made into a video.

My supervisor was pleased with the proposal and approved it. However, with the development of the project and changes made during the process the research questions wordings were changed a few more times,

  1. "What is karma looking through the eyes of western culture?"

  2. "What is karma through the eyes of popular culture?"

  3. "How is karma expressed through popular culture?"

During the Group Crit session with Miriam Sorentinno's team (22.03.2021), Miriam pointed out that the presentation of the project I did wasn't answering the research question (last question above). Therefore, David suggested I rephrase the research question to "How is karma expressed in the popular imagination". Then the final project proposal was made and David approved it.

Final Proposal

"How is karma expressed in the popular imagination?"

The project aims to show, how the concept of “karma” is expressed from the perspective of popular imagination. In this project, I am aiming to get testimonials of people’s real-life Karma experiences.

This will be a solo project done, collaborating with other individuals who will be sharing their real-life experiences via a video clip. For this project, I will be collecting video clips of individuals talking about their real-life karma experiences that will be put together and made into one video along with a video of myself explaining what this project is about and what I aim to portray to the viewer. For the exhibition, I will do one or two of the following,

- Show the video as my exhibit

- Design an exhibit that shows the theory “what goes around, comes around”

- Create posters with an image of the individual and a quote from them

Participant's Consent

I carried small scale research using a poll on Instagram with 192 people to find participants for the project on 04.02.2021 (to read more about the research click here). More than 50 people agreed to participate in the research. The next element that should be considered in this project is the participants' consent as the research must be done ethically. Therefore, an ethics form had to be filled and my supervisor, David approved it. The participants' consent included the following,

  • What is this project about? To find how karma is expressed in the popular imagination.

  • Why have I been approached to take part in the research? Because you agreed to share your experience of karma during the online research done to find suitable participants.

  • If I take part in the research, what will I be doing? You will be sharing with me one of your good or bad real-life karma experiences in a form of a video either recording it yourself or on a video call with me (Showing your face or not is your preference) or sending me it via a direct message.

  • What will happen to my data? Your data will be put on a Wix website under your approval.

The participants have to sign the consent form if they agree to the following terms,

  • I have read the Participant Information Sheet about this study

  • I have had an opportunity to ask questions and discuss this study

  • I have received satisfactory answers to all my questions

  • I have received enough information about this study

  • I understand that I am/the participant is free to withdraw from this study:

    • At any time (until such date as this will no longer be possible, which I have been told)

    • Without giving a reason for withdrawing

    • (If I am/the participant is or intends to become, a student at the University of Greenwich) without affecting my/the participant’s future with the University

  • I agree to take part in this study

Below is a screenshot of a message and consent form I sent to a participant via WhatsApp.

I have managed to attend all classes and supervisions scheduled and was able to manage the time effectively although the scheduled activities on the proposal weren't able to be completed by the scheduled dates and times. However, I was able to balance everything and complete the project before the deadline.
