PROJECT PROGRESSION

Supervision & Feedback

This section demonstrates the development of the project from the proposal stage to the submission stage of the final project including the feedback, suggestions and critiques received by the supervisor, other module lecturers and classmates.

One-to-one Supervision

26.10.2020

This was the very first one-to-one session with my supervisor David Waterworth. I presented my initial idea of doing a research project based on the question "Does karma exist?" in the proposal.

David gave the following feedback and suggestions,

  • The research question is not clear and it should be changed

  • Think more about the artistic representations of the concept of karma

  • Find examples of a practice-based methodology with which you intend to carry out your project

  • Suggested the following books to boost my knowledge about this concept,

After the session, I did some research and gathered many sources that would be beneficial for the project. Click the below button to view the research notes I made after the session.

Group Supervision

23.11.2020

This session was based on research and practice-based projects. I presented the researches that I have done and the ideas that have developed after the previous one-to-one session. I mentioned how a Sri Lankan artist's artwork based on "karma" inspired me (link below) and I approached him to discuss his artwork. https://www.artpeoplegallery.com/karma-concept-art/

During the conversation, the artist told me that the concept of karma was too deep and that it would be better to narrow it down to get the best out of my research. He suggested I contact a Buddhist Monk to get more information about the concept of karma. David suggested I do the same but before contacting anyone, to get a participant's consent form done.

One-to-one Supervision

25.01.2021

In this session, David and I made some major changes to the research question as my research was not going as planned. He made me understand that finding whether karma exists is not practical. Therefore, we did the following,

  • Narrowed down the research to find how people express karma through everyday life

  • Changed the initial research question to "How does the concept of karma operate in everyday discourse?"

  • Decided to create a video for the final project (brainstormed ideas for the video content after the session are in the photograph)

  • Look at karma on the concept of the popular saying "what goes around, comes around"

Afterwards, necessary changes to the project proposal were made.

One-to-one Supervision

04.02.2021

David and I discussed the ideas I developed after the last one-to-one session. I mentioned that I have made a decision to do a video of people sharing their real-life karma experiences as the final project outcome.

Furthermore, we discussed what should be done for the next group crit session as we were requested to do a 10-minute presentation of the outcome of our research and what content should be included in the interim report (ideas developed for the presentation after the session is in the photographs).

After the session, I did small-scale social media research to find participants for the project. Click the below button for more information on the social media research.

Group Crits

08.02.2021

This was a group crit session where all the members in the session presented their research outcomes and ideas developed for the project. I presented a draft video which I have made to show how I wanted my final project video to look like. David gave the following feedback,

  • Likes the idea of telling the story sitting in front of a plain white background

  • Likes the idea of wearing a plain coloured top

  • Try to shorten the length of the story

  • Omit the 12 laws of karma section and "put your finger down" challenge

Furthermore, one of the classmates suggested reducing the background music as it was too loud. Below is the draft video I made for the presentation.

One-to-one Supervision

22.02.2021

This session was focused on the Interim Report development. However, during this session, David suggested rephrasing the research question: "What is karma looking through the eyes of western culture?".

Furthermore, I showed David how the methodologies for my project video was inspired by the YouTube videos done by the British Author, Storyteller, Podcaster, YouTuber and Former Monk Jay Shetty (below is the link to his YouTube channel).

One-to-one Supervision

19.03.2021

This one-to-one session was done before the second Group Crits session in which we were requested to present something that would give an idea of the final project. I mentioned the social media research that I have done and the responses I have received from my friends regarding the research. David suggested the following,

  • To make at least two video clips of my friends sharing their real-life karma story to present on the Group Crit session

  • Look into what outfit and colour they would be wearing in the video

  • Reading the stories myself instead of having friends to present it

Furthermore, he suggested to consider rephrasing my project question again as the wordings didn't sit quite right. I then changed it to "How is karma expressed in the popular culture?".

Group Crits

22.03.2021

This Group Crit session was done together with Miriam Sorrentino's group. I presented a developed version of the video from the last crit session. I made a video essay with two video clips of two of my friends talking about their real-life karma stories. I got the following feedback,

Miriam

  • The music in the video sounds a bit too cliche and gives a yoga session vibe

  • Put down the music volume much lower

  • Change the questions wording 'popular culture' because it gives a different meaning

David

  • Think about the circularity of the music to relate it to the concept "what goes around comes around"

  • Rephrase the question to "How is karma expressed in the popular imagination?"

Classmate

  • Edit out the long pauses in the video and make them shorter to keep the audience engaged

Below is the draft video made for the presentation.

One-to-one Supervision

14.05.2021

This session was focused on the feedback from the Interim Report. David suggested I focus more on finding more references and making sure that I show proof of the academic texts I have been using. He also asked me to clearly mention the focused group I interviewed and used as participants for the project and gave me ideas in terms of the music I can use in the final video.

This section was focused on the portfolio. I told David my ideas of doing a zine portfolio as I was concerned about the participants' privacy. The colour theme of the portfolio was something that I was concerned and I told David that I wanted to give the colour theme to be black and white because Yin Yang is the oriental understanding of karma (KARMA – The Yin and Yang of it, 2015) and the symbol of Yin and Yang is black and white (below is the link to the article).

During the Easter break, my idea of doing a zine changed to doing a website portfolio as I was concerned about the digital exhibition. In this session, the draft website portfolio I developed was shown. The draft idea of doing a video exhibit and an installation exhibit with participants images and quotes were shown to David and these were the feedback,

  • Make the bench stop moving

  • Make the pictures expandable when it is clicked

  • Use other methodologies to express karma in the portfolio

Many changes were done to the portfolio after the last one-to-one session. I developed the methodologies in which I can express karma throughout the portfolio and made the images expandable in the poster exhibit. David gave the following feedback,

  • Use text in the project proposal section instead of the proposal itself

  • Change the wordings of 'Ethics Form' to 'Participants Consent'

  • Don't write too much information in the project progression section

  • Likes the idea of the symbols used around the participants quotes on the poster exhibit

This is the last meeting I had with David. In this session, I presented the final video of the project and showed the final version of the exhibit page. David gave the following feedback,

  • Get rid of the word 'back' in the quote I wrote as "what goes around, comes back around"

  • Get rid of the white flashes in between the cuts of the video as it is sort of disturbing

  • Reduce the length of the introduction of the video

  • Reduce the number of memes shown in the video

  • Add quotes at the end of each participants story to sum things up
